Exporting an SVG

In Solidworks:

  1. Select/open component

  2. Select the extrude you wish to cut

  3. File -> Save As -> (save as type dropdown) "Dxf (*.dxf)"

    1. if a prompt appears after "Save As" click "save as a copy and continue"

  4. In the "DXF/DWG Output" window that appears, choose the following options:

    1. Annotation views 🔘

    2. Views to export: Current or Front ('Current' if you're focused at the face you want to laser cut)

    3. Hit the

  5. Check the preview window that appears to make sure everything looks a good

Open Inkscape

  1. Drag in/import the DXF you just saved

  2. An import dialog appears ("DXF Input")

    1. Method of scaling: Read From File 🔘

    2. Hit save

    3. NOTE: If this results in an incorrectly sized drawing, try again and select Manual Scaling and enter:

      1. 25.4 for inches, 10 for cm, 1 for mm

  3. An input dialog appears ("SVG Input")

    1. Check: Include SVG image as editable object(s) in the current file 🔘

    2. Hit Ok

  4. Select the drawing, then hit Ctrl + shift + F on your keyboard to open the Fill and Stroke menu.

  5. Set stroke width under "Stroke Style" to 0.01 mm (make sure to select mm in the dropdown, not px etc

  6. File -> Save (or Save As) -> save your file somwhere
